Everything around the acreage is a little more difficult in winter. Oh, the season has its charms, but when water freezes and bone chilling winds cut through the warmest coat, even the smallest outdoor chores become a mental and physical challenge.
Compared to the demands that winter places on our animals, however, we’ve got it easy. When we’ve had enough of the cold and retire to hearthside, our pets and livestock usually remain out in the elements. Fortunately, nature has equipped them to manage surprisingly well, but a little forethought and effort on our part can make the winter lives of our animals significantly more comfortable and healthful.

Rural Winter Preparation

If you have ever been fortunate enough to spend time on a farm, a ranch or just a small patch of land, you are probably aware of the responsibilities necessary to keep such places in working order. A beautifully manicured piece of land is not something that just happens; there are literally hundreds of tasks that must be completed to keep things in order. Sure, it is always possible to put off one or two chores on occasion but neglecting winter preparation is not only foolish, it can be costly.

Staying Warm

You may think it gets cold in the winter where you are but where Rich Seifert is, it gets COLD. 35 to 40 below for a week at a time, says Seifert, who’s a professor and Extension energy and housing specialist with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
